Black Lamina

Black Lamina is a collection of ceramic pieces made using black Vulcan clay, a material known for its unpredictability in the glazing process. The way it reacts with glaze often reveals uneven surfaces and tonal variations after firing, leaving elements that cannot be fully controlled.

The word lamina refers to layers, reflecting the subtle build-up of uneven glaze across the surface. These layers represent scars we carry through life. Whether physical or emotional, they are shaped over time through experience.

I’ve come to believe that these scars are not something that can be permanently removed, but something we learn to live with and grow from. They form part of who we are, adding depth, character, and unique beauty.

In the same way, each piece within Black Lamina carries its own outcome - unpredictable, imperfect, yet uniquely its own.
